Defining Spiritual Brokenness

Define the word broken:

Define what spiritual brokenness is:

Sin is the word for brokenness in the Bible. What does the word sin mean in Greek?

Currently, is there anyone on this earth who is without sin or unaffected by brokenness? Romans 3:10

In some ways, this is good news. We are all in this together. No man is better than another. As it relates to perfection, we all miss the mark.

How did sin enter the world? Read Genesis 3

How was God merciful to Adam and Eve, despite their choice to go against God’s protection for them? Did they die right away? What did God provide for them? Gen 3:21 and Gen 4:1-2

Look at the news, all we see is the brokenness in our world. We also examine the brokenness of our hearts and acknowledge that we are marred by sin both within and without.

Sin entered the world through one man, Adam. What is our position in relation to God’s presence because of our sin? Romans 5:12-14 MSG

God related personally with Adam and Eve. How does Genesis 3:8 describe how God related to Adam and Eve in the Garden? Genesis 3:8

What was God’s heart when he created the Garden, and invited the Israelites to build the tabernacle, and the temple? Exodus 25:8, Ez 37:27

God is not distant. He is a prayer away. He desires to dwell with you.

Application:

Practice the first set of Keys to Building Home

1) Invite God, the Master Builder, to come and evaluate the brokenness in your life.

Pray before you start:

Dear Jesus, Thank you for your desire to dwell with me. There is so much brokenness in my life and in this world. Please come and, as I journal, provide me with insight into the areas of brokenness in my life.

What burdens or areas of brokenness do you want to bring before the Lord?

2) Practice Lament

In this study, we will not be using a formal structure for practicing lament. For your reference, Mark Vroegop's book, "Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament," offers a framework for practicing lament through prayer based on the Psalms. Psalm 6 is an example of a Lament prayer to the Lord. Using Psalm 6, craft your own lament to the Lord based on the identified areas of brokenness in your life.

Invite God to evaluate your brokenness and practice lament, and watch in faith how God answers your prayers.
