Steps to Soul Restoration
To the One Who Accepted Jesus, but Continues to Struggle
or
You have Just Accepted Jesus as Savior
Some of you are thinking, "Kayleen, I have been a Christian my whole life, but I still struggle with depression and anxiety. Where is God? Why hasn't he cleared out the mess in my life?"
For the Christian who is feeling desperate, there is hope. God has not abandoned you. He has promised us that we will have troubles in this world. (John 16:33 NIV) He has not promised to take us out of the world, but that he will never leave us or forsake us. (Heb 13:5-6 NIV). He will be with us through the difficult times in life.
We live in a broken and fallen world. There is a concept of being redeemed now, but not fully yet. God has redeemed us when we accept him in our lives. BUT this earth, in its brokenness, is our temporary home. It is our temporary tent. (2 Corinthians 5:1 NIV) Our true home is in heaven, where we will live with God eternally, where there is no more pain, no depression, anxiety, or suffering. Some things will not change on this earth, but we can hope for the complete restoration that awaits those who believe.
Step 3: Clean house
Cleaning our physical house is important for the regular functionality of everyday life. What if we never picked up, did the dishes, or did the laundry? Chaos! The same is for our mind and spirit. The Lord calls us not to follow the way that the world says is best, but "be transformed by the renewal of your mind" (Romans 12:2 ESV).
How are we to renew our minds? By laying "aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1). We clean house by confessing the sin within and our misconceptions of God. We are to cast the burden we carry back to Christ, for he cares for us.
Once we have cleaned up the mess, let us build a lasting relationship with God, and fill our minds with what is good and uplifting- the Bible. David encourages us, "Blessed is the man...his delight is in the law of the Lord and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither." (Psalm 1:1-3 ESV)
In our last step, God gives us another way to find peace and growth in him.
